This practice teaches us that thoughts and emotions come and go, just like the waves come and go in the sea.  We can learn to allow them to come and pass without getting caught in the leading edge.

Unpleasant thoughts and feelings can seem powerful and threatening, and our natural tendency is to struggle with them.  But like the waves on the ocean, thoughts and emotions have their own natural rhythm and will come and pass on their own if we allow them to do that.  In this practice, we learn to be more like gulls on the sea, bobbing up and down, as each wave of emotion or thought passes by.
